Abstract : The tensile properties and fatigue performance of 51 v/o beryllium wire/6061-0 aluminum matrix composites were determined. Specimens of both uniaxial and crossplyed filament orientations were tested. All properties obtained were at their maximum anticipated levels. Continued work with Be wire/titanium matrix composites featured the satisfactory fabrication of 51 v/o composites yielding near rule of mixtures strength and tensile modulus. Also, the ballistic impact and fatigue characteristics for Be/Ti were established as satisfactory for many applications. Potential applications for Be reinforced composites are being considered which show payoffs sufficient to justify the extremely costly Be wires. (Author)
