Abstract : Since most commercial field intensity meters employ antennas and receivers whose electrical match is far from ideal, it is essential to know how this mismatch affects the calibration and use of these instruments. A number of equations showing explicitly the effects of electrical mismatch are derived from both transmitting and receiving systems and emphasis is placed on field intensity meters. One conclusion that is evident from these equations is that the usual practice of calibrating the receiver of a field intensity meter as a 'two-terminal' voltmeter is very undesirable because this practice involves errors due to mismatch of over 6 dB for typical commercial meters. It is shown how these errors can be reduced to less than 1 dB by calibrating the field intensity meter in terms of suitable parameters. (Author)
