Abstract : The existing solutions for gas lubricated self-acting, stepped-sector thrust bearings are reviewed and their limitations discussed. An experimental investigation of the effect of thermal warpage at high bearing numbers in a bearing optimized by Ausman's procedure is described. Three experimental attempts failed due to the failure of the rotating assembly to lift off of the bearing face during start up, causing wiping of the thrust runner and bearing. (Author)
