Abstract : The analysis of rectangular shallow shells with arbitrary boundary conditions and shapes is formulated using the method of modified finite difference and framework analogy. The analysis and the digital computer program is developed with the object of using the large scale digital computers efficiently to solve a wide variety of elastic problems in the class of shallow rectangular shells. The boundary conditions at the edges can arbitrarily be specified as free, simply supported (roller), fixed, or can be supported by edge beams. The thickness of the shell, the distance from an arbitrary plane to the panel points and the loading can be specified as desired. The analysis of linear elastic shells is developed using a displacement method of approach. Equations of equilibrium, strain-displacement relationships and strain-stress resultant relationships are developed independently in series of matrix equations. The stiffness matrix is developed in the form of series of submatrices. The elements of the portion of the stiffness matrix and the load vector at any level n is automatically generated and modified by eliminating appropriate rows and columns, depending upon the forced boundary conditions.
