Abstract : A silicone, polyimide prepolymer, and a carborane-modified polybenzimidazole resin were evaluated as flame-and arc plasma-sprayed protective coatings. Considerable decomposition of the silicone powder into carbonaceous material was observed in flame-spraying studies, while promising deposits were obtained in arc plasma-spraying investigations. Plasma-sprayed silicone coatings were flat grey in color, relatively soft and pinhole-free, and contained partially melted particles. Deposits obtained by flame spraying of the polyimide prepolymer contained large amounts of carbonaceous material within a melted polymer matrix. No decomposition was observed in coatings produced by plasma spraying, and such coatings were reasonably continuous films, glossy brown with good hardness. Crack-free polyimide prepolymer coatings were also produced. Addition of 5% benzoic anhydride catalyst to the polyimide prepolymer spray powder appeared to increase the degree of cure in the resultant sprayed coatings. Coatings sprayed from partially cured polyimide prepolymer powder demonstrated improved hardness and adhesion. The thermal stability of unmodified silicone and polyimide prepolymer coatings was observed in inert and oxiding environments.
