Abstract : This report describes the design development and field testing of the AN/TRC-104 (XW-1) Lightweight Troposcatter Radio Program. The purpose of this program was to prove the feasibility of building a reliable 12-channel troposcatter radio set weighing less than 500 lb and having a range greater than 80 n mi. The AN/TRC-104 met the design objectives. The approach used in the design of the AN/TRC-104 was to make use of some of the unique characteristics of tropospheric scatter propagation rather than attempting to use brute force. The result of this approach was a frequency diversity system employing an error/erasure-correcting code. This system is called a Coded Diversity system. Two models of the AN/TRC-104 were built. This report describes the approach used in design and the rationale behind it. A tabulation of characteristics of the AN/TRC-104 and a short description of each major component are also included.
