Abstract : This document is a study of the uses of photographic emulsions as phase objects in coherent optical systems. In it theory is formulated for determining the detailed properties of images of phase objects; effects of bleaching of film are determined with respect to the use of film in signal processing systems; a highly stable interferometer system is devised and used for generating phase objects; and the theory of scattering by photographic grains is extended.
