Abstract : The preparation of operational VTOL landing sites by the air delivery technique using a bag-fluid system dropped from a CH-3C helicopter was investigated. To predict the bag opening process upon impact, a theoretical law was developed for both laminar and turbulent flow conditions. Plain and fiber glass-attached bags were tested in drops from two towers and a CH-3C helicopter. With diameters ranging from 3 to 30 feet, the bags were filled with either water, flow test liquid, or polyester resin. The combination of parameters used to correlate the experimental data approximated the combination of parameters derived in the theoretical predictions. (Author)
