Abstract : Sea conditions are discussed, reasons are given for investigating severe wave effects, and data on waves is reproduced. The effects of orbital motion on hydrofoil lift are formulated for a foil restrained from heave and pitch, and examples of lift variation are given for a chosen configuration in severe waves. It is found that the vertical velocity of the water particles in conjunction with the forward foil speed is the major influence on lift and can be used as the first approximation to the total effect. Lift variation as a function of wave size, foil speed, and foil characteristics are formulated and examples given, showing the region of stalling. The limiting factor of cavitation due to increased lift is discussed, showing the effect of foil shape. The influence of change in submergence is briefly discussed and is considered to be small.
