Abstract : Viscosity of NaClO4, NaSCN, NaB(Ph)4, (i-amyl)3BuNB(Ph)4, and CF3SO3Na in DMSO were determined over a concentration range 0.001 M to near saturation and temperature range 25 to 50C. The viscosity data were analyzed with the Jones-Dole equation up to approximately 0.1 M. Ionic viscosity B coefficients were interpreted by the Einstein equation for viscosity to obtain the effective ionic radii for the ions. (i-amyl)3BuN(+), B(Ph)4(-), and Na(+) ions have spherical kinetic entities with effective radii of 4.90A, 4.90A, and 3.83A respectively in viscous flow. Na(+) is solvated. CF3SO3(-), SCN(-), and C104(-) are unsolvated in DMSO. Effective ionic radii obtained from the B coefficients are insensitive to temperature for the ions. The activation energy for viscous flow for the electrolyte solutions was interpreted by the activated rate process. The results show that (i-amyl)3BuN(+), B(Ph) 4(-), and the Na(+) ions present obstruction while CF3SO3(-) and SCN(-) ions present little or no influence on the viscous flow. The ClO4(-) ion appears to be a structure breaker in DMSO and tends to lower the activation energy for viscous flow in the dilute concentration range. (Author)
