Abstract : Conductance, viscosity, and density of tetraamylammonium thiocyanate in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) were determined at 55C over a concentration range from 0.001M to the molten salt; i.e., 2.55M. (n-amyl)4NSCN has a limiting equivalent conductance of 64.16 sq. cm/ohm equivalent in DMSO at 55C and association constant of 16.2 liter/mole in the dilute concentration range. The (n-amyl)4N(+) ion is unsolvated in DMSO and has an effective radius of 5.21A. The conductance data in the concentrated region were fitted by the Wishaw-Stokes equation using the ion size fitting parameter a = 3.5A. The significance of the fitting is discussed. The results seem to indicate that the molten (n-amyl)4NSCN is not completely dissociated into its ions. Addition of DMSO molecules into the molten salt increases the Walden product of the solution. The increase appears to be unique to polar solvents and is interpreted as due to an increase of ion fraction. (Author)
