Abstract : Photochromic SrTiO3 has been investigated with the aim of understanding the photochromic process in SrTiO3 and of improving the material for use as eye protection against nuclear explosion. The charge transfer model has been clarified and extended. Optical absorption, EPR, and heat treatment studies have been used to identify all of the photochromic absorption bands with specific transition ions and crystal sites. The optical density has been improved by more than a factor of two and the concentration dependence determined. A theory is developed which shows that the maximum optical density is limited by electron tunneling, and this limit has been reached in SrTiO3. All of the parameters relevant to the eye protection application have been measured and evaluated, such as: optical density, thermal decay time, and efficiency of coloration. Some preliminary hot-pressing experiments were carried out. Although optical-quality material was not obtained, the results were encouraging since densities as high as 99.8% of the single-crystal value were obtained. (Author)
