Abstract : The behavior of mechanical shock isolation elements suitable for in-silo shock isolation systems was investigated. Special emphasis was placed on the study of the generation and transmission of high frequency effects in shock isolators. The mechanical shock isolation elements surveyed, examined and studied were the helical spring, torsion bar, elastomer, liquid spring, coulomb damper, viscous damper, pneumatic spring, ring spring, and Belleville spring. Prototype shock isolators were conceptually designed for a given shock environment and missile-silo geometry. Distributed parameter equations of motion were derived for each of the shock isolator-missile systems. Test models were obtained by scaling the prototype design or through selection of commercially available elements that were compatible with the test machine and that satisfy the design criteria of shock attenuation. Experiments were conducted on the helical spring, liquid spring, pneumatic spring, ring spring, elastomers, friction snubber and dashpot. An analytical-experimental evaluation of these results was made to determine the local and global effectiveness of each isolator. (Author)
