Abstract : A Product Improvement Test of Cargo Slings, Paulin, was conducted to compare the strength and durability of the current sling which is reinforced with rope with the test sling which is reinforced with nylon; to determine if performance and maintenance characteristics of the cargo sling meet user requirements; and to furnish timely feedback on equipment problems to U.S. Army Mobility Equipment Command to allow for early correction or other action. It was concluded that: nylon webbing is satisfactory in regard to strength; nylon straps are easier to insert into cargo hooks and fit more securely than Manila rope; nylon straps do not stretch under load and result in greater stability of load than the Manila sling; nylon sling is preferred over the rope sling by winch operators and stevedores; both types of slings are durable with respect to reinforcing--canvas material is not durable on either type; performance of the nylon sling meets user requirements in normal transportation terminal application; and maintenance characteristics of the two slings are comparable. It is recommended that use of nylon straps in lieu of Manila rope as reinforcing material be considered satisfactory and canvas material be further reinforced or strengthened to increase useful life of the sling.
