Abstract : Several approaches to preparing flexible polymers containing fluorinatedcyclobutene and cyclobutane rings were unsuccessful, but one approach wasquite promising. Pyrolytic modification of polyperfluorocyclobutene resultedin a condensed structure and eventual chain shortening. Polymerization ofcyclobutenes through the reaction with sulfide ion resulted in inflexiblepolymers with poor thermal stability, and polymerization by the reaction ofbisfluoroxy compounds also was unsuccessful due to difficulty in preparingthe fluoroxy monomer. However, a potentially good polymerization reaction,the quantitative reaction of perfluorocyclobutoxide with perfluorocyclobuteneto form a diether compound, was found. A possible method for chain extensionof polymers containing perfluorocyclobutenyl ethers by the reaction of sulfideion was also developed. (Author-PL)
