Abstract : This study was conducted to analyze the use of the NWC-developed head-coupled television (HCTV) experimental system as a head-coupled optical director (HCODR) for a ship's fire-control system. For the tests, the HCTV system was mounted on the experimental ship's motion simulator (SMS) at NWC, to be used by a human observer to track stationary targets. Six observers, some of whom had had no previous experience with the system, participated in the tests, which were conducted under varying conditions of sea state, physical position, lens size, etc. The primary objective was to measure the characteristic accuracy with which an observer aims his head-mounted display toward a target while he is being oscillated around three mutually perpendicular axes of rotation. Standard deviations in human tracking errors were on the order of 0.1 deg during low motion and 0.5 deg during full motion, verifying that the HCTV system is feasible for use as a remote shipboard director.
