Abstract : An improved design of an electromagnetic exciter to generate large alternating forces of the magnitude plus or minus 1700 N is discussed. This exciter has about the same dimensions (120 magnetic flux x 230) as a conventionally used electrodynamic exciter yielding only plus or minus 20 N alternating force. The flux distribution along the magnetic path has been calculated and compared with actual measurement. It was found that flux scatter in the magnetic branch circuit has been responsible in reducing the force capability of this exciter, which would have otherwise been around plus or minus 3500 N. By long hand computation technique the natural frequency values for an 18 stage milling machine gear box are determined and compared with measured values. The calculated values are found to be much higher than the measured ones, due to simplifying assumptions made in the mathematical model. (Author)
