Abstract : Two underwater sound experiments were conducted, one in the Baltic Sea and the other in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Spain. The data of these experiments were analyzed to determine such properties of the bottom as the layer number, depth and sound velocity. A review of two mathematical calculations used in the data analysis is also given. The Baltic Sea data indicated that the bottom was homogeneous. It also indicated that the water layer could be considered as a perfect waveguide. The Atlantic data indicated that the bottom was a finite layer over a semi-infinite homogeneous high velocity sub-bottom. (Author)
