Abstract : The need for low-absorption windows (about 0.1 percent/cm) for use in high-power CO2 lasers prompted a preliminary survey study in which a variety of samples were grown and measurements of absorption were made at 10.6 microns. A discussion of possible absorption mechanisms is included. It appears that the heretofore neglected electron polarizability is a relevant parameter in the absorption process. (Author)
