Abstract : The Chief of Naval Operations has delegated responsibility to the Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) to (1) provide primary support and technical services for the development and use of Naval Nuclear Shore Reactor Power Plants, and (2) to provide program and technical coordination for the development and use of Navy Radioisotope Power Devices (RPDs). NAVFAC's objective is to develop the use of reactor power plants and radioisotope power devices to supply cost effective power sources for Navy applications. At the present time this is being accomplished by operation of the PM-3A (a shore reactor power plant), operation of commercially available RPDs, and operation of radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTG) developed by the AEC. In addition to obtaining operating experience and data in actual applications, design criteria to improve the RTGs and decrease the safety controls required is being acquired. The report gives summary status information on the Navy Nuclear Shore Systems Program.
