Abstract : A one year program is reported on a study of methods offering promise of substantially increasing the efficiency of traveling-wave tube with high power levels over wide bandwidths. Methods explored in more detail included dispersion shaping of the helix phase velocity by anisotropic shield loading in conjunction with velocity resynchronization at large signal levels. From cold test data and large signal computations it is predicted that electronic efficiencies in excess of 40% over more than one octave bandwidth should be feasible with these methods. This would also require a coherent harmonic drive signal in the lower frequency range to eliminate the degrading effects of simultaneous harmonic interaction. With an experimental tube, which incorporated anisotropic shield loading, a velocity taper and a double stage collector, efficiencies of up to 57% and more than 40% over an octave bandwidth at S-band were demonstrated with more than 1 kW with collector depression and harmonic drive. Without harmonic drive the efficiency dropped to 35% at the lower frequency limit, but exceeded 40% over an octave bandwidth. The efficiency was improved by collector depression by a factor of at least 1.25 over an octave bandwidth. (Author)
