Abstract : A solid-state electronic circuit is presented that serves as a timing control for the flash lamp of a ruby laser operating with a Q-switch. The latter consists of a motor-driven rotating prism. The 30,000 rpm motor provides for a Q-switching frequency of up to 500 Hz. Another prism mounted on the same motor shaft serves as a shutter between an external light source and a photodiode. This arrangement thus generates the driving pulses for the timing circuit that is designed to deliver delay periods from 10 microseconds to 10 msec. The output of the timing circuit is fed to the ignition circuit that, in turn, delivers a shaped high-voltage ignition pulse to the flash lamp at the optimum time.
