Abstract : High spectral resolution studies were made of the N2 1PG (5-2), N2 1PG (1-0), Meinel N2(+) (1-0) and O2 atmospheric oxygen (0-1) band emissions of the aurora. The observed spectral profiles of the N2 1PG and Meinel N2(+) emissions were fitted to synthetic profiles. Direct electron impact was determined to be the major excitation mechanism for these two systems. The twilight emissions of lithium were detected and spectrally resolved on two separate occasions. The power spectrum of auroral N2 1PG and Meinel band intensity variations was obtained, with emphasis being placed on that portion of the spectrum above 15 Hz. (Author)
