Abstract : The complete chemical characterization of prepolymers which are to be used as propellant binders includes descriptions of the molecular weight distribution, elemental and functional analyses, and microstructure. Included in this report are the characterizations of several commercial hydroxyl- and carboxyl-terminated polybutadienes. Conclusions about the possible polymer initiation, propagation, and termination steps for the commercial binder candidates were drawn from experiments on these polymers and many research samples prepared. The experimental procedures which are described include the determination of: (1) Hydroxyl content by near infrared analysis, and 19F NMR analysis of the corresponding tribluoroacetates; (2) Carboxyl content by non-aqueous titration with alcoholic potassium hydroxide; (3) Microstructure by infrared and NMR techniques; and (4) Solution properties and molecular weights by vapor pressure osmometry and viscosity measurements.
