Abstract : It is now generally acknowledged that the preparation and characterization of the material is as important a part of a solid state research or development problem, as the physical measurements made on the material. Clearly one of the major aspects of materials preparation is the ability to predict conditions under which new materials may be prepared, and to delineate the physico-chemical conditions which define the stability and reproducibility of a phase. The purpose of the research summarized is to provide such crystal chemical information to complement solid state physics and device development research. Because materials with interesting magnetic, electrical and optical properties usually involve elements with unfilled shells, the research is concentrated on systems involving transition metals such as Mn-O, Cr-O, Tc-O, and V-O, and rare-earth systems such as Nd-O, Eu-O, and Sm-O. Three articles written in Aug. 1969 are included. Their titles are 'Stabilities of the divalent rare earth oxides', 'Two new ternary copper platinum oxides', and the 'Synthesis of a new scheelite-type polymorph of cadmium chromate'.
