Abstract : The aim of the investigation was to develop a quantitative systems approach to developing alloys with high fracture toughness, where nickel steels were selected as the model system. The study divided the effects of nickel on mechanical properties into direct or intrinsic effects and indirect or microstructural effects. The important fracture parameters were defined and the effect of nickel on these parameters was determined. Major emphasis was given to the effect of nickel on the fracture behavior in tension and notch bending. (Author)
