Abstract : Experimental mass spectrometric studies of the vaporization of graphite are described. A small graphite-tantalum Knudsen cell has been constructed and heated to above 3150K. Encouraging results were obtained for C1 to C4. Further experiments in vaporization to 3150K are described and discussed, as are results of C3(+) appearance potential measurements and impulse heating experiments. The pulsed molecular beam apparatus has been assembled on the mass spectrometer and reflected beams detected for C1, C2, and C3. (Author)
