Abstract : Data from low cycle, axial fatigue tests of HY-130(T) plain plates and butt weldments, and HY-100(T) plain plates are presented. The fatigue test results of plain plates of HY-130(T) material (descaled and painted) are compared to the data for earlier specimens tested with the mill scale intact. Tests of HY-130(T) butt-welded specimens fabricated by two procedures, one using a coated electrode and the other a second generation GMA wire have been conducted at a stress cycle of 0 to +80 ksi. The behavior of both sound weldments and weldments with intentionally introduced defects such as porosity, lack of fusion, lack of penetration, transverse cracking and slag has been examined. The results of radiographic examinations of fatigue crack initiation and propagation in the defective weldments are reported. Three plain plates of HY-100(T) material (grit blasted) were tested in fatigue, two at 0 to +80 ksi and one at 0 to +100 ksi. These preliminary data are compared with the results of similar tests conducted using earlier HY-100 plate material on which the mill-scale remained intact. Two welding wires, one a coated electrode and the other a GMA wire, will be used to fabricate the HY-100(T) butt-welded specimens. The qualification test results and a description of the welding procedure adopted for the coated electrode are reported. (Author)
