Abstract : This publication was prepared to meet a requirement for a more accurate method of computing winds to high altitudes. Under circumstances when strong winds exist aloft, the radiosonde or radar target may be carried a great distance from the observing site. Means for determining balloon height and distance from slant-range and elevation-angle data which do not consider curvature of the earth and refraction of the radar beam may then produce significantly erroneous results. The curvature of the earth and a 'normal' refractivity have been included in the formulation of the problem, and the solution is presented in graphical form in this publication. However, since a single graph would either be too large for convenient shipboard use or of too small a scale to provide the desired accuracy, the graph is printed in a succession of page-size sections.
