Abstract : Expressions for the Faraday rotation of the backscattered and transmitted waves, at the interface between vacuum and semi-infinite medium, are derived from the boundary conditions on the electric and magnetic vectors. The parameters of the medium entering these expressions are derived from the classical equations of motion of a charged damped harmonic oscillator, in a dc magnetic field, driven by circularly polarized radiation, at the oscillators resonant frequency. The rotations of the backscattered and transmitted waves at the interface between molecular oxygen (under standard conditions of temperature and pressure) and vacuum in a magnetic field of one Gauss are 0.000075 radians and 0.00037 radians, respectively.
