Abstract : The development effort described herein, was concerned with the fabrication of a solid state display and associated electronics. The basis of the display was the integral switch electroluminescent lamp substrates. Switching diodes were imbedded in a thin circuit board which formed a support structure for lamp, fluorescent and light-piping media. Peripheral logic and control circuitry was built to address the display from a computer input. The main development efforts were centered on diode placement and light-pipe formation, which presented fabrication and handling problems due to small component size. Electronics were fabricated for driving a 180 by 240 X-Y matrix (43,200) randomly accessed elements, to display data which is generated by a DDP-116 computer. A peak excitation voltage of 400 volts, at a refresh rate of 400 frames-per-second, was used. An eight by three inch prototype electroluminescent lamp-switch matrix board was fabricated with integral diodes and resistors. Fluorescent-coated light pipes, at a density of 30 per-inch, were placed on each side of the board to form the display line. Ninety display lines are required to form the total display package.
