Abstract : The need exists for piezoelectric ceramics having increased tensile strength for eventual application in high-power sonar transducers. To this end, high-strength single-crystal whiskers of silicon carbide, silicon nitride, and sapphire have been incorporated into the matrices of barium titanate and lead zirconate titanate ceramics. Results to date indicate that a whisker reinforced ceramic can be fabricated without destroying its piezoelectric or dielectric properties. Although the activity of the whiskered material is somewhat lower than that of comparable pure ceramic, indications are that further developmental work will eradicate this deficiency. (Author)
