Abstract : It has been recognized for a long time that radar data must be averaged in time to be a useful indicator of precipitation rate. The amount of radar signal return from a point in space at a particular instant of time is dependent not only on the number and size of the raindrops but to the exact locations in space of these raindrops. As rainfall rate is dependent only upon the number and size of the raindrops, the spatial information inherent in a single (or instantaneous) radar measurement is undesirable. To remove these effects of spatial location of drops, the traditional method is to observe the same point in space over an interval of time sufficiently long so that a number of different spatial configurations of drops are observed. To remove the spatial effect, (sometimes referred to as noise), a time average of the signal for the observation time is necessary. A major handicap of previous work has been the inability to assess the reliability of this time average and even to perform an adequate amount of time averaging to yield meaningful measurements of rainfall rate from the radar. The major effort on the contract is to determine whether better averaging or processing of the signal will yield more accurate measurements of the rainfall rates. The design of the integrator necessary for the research of this contract has been completed and construction is proceeding. (Author)
