Abstract : An AC Electric Propulsion System, consisting of a high-speed gas turbine and direct-coupled alternator, static frequency converters, and AC induction drive motors, demonstrated its feasibility in an operational system. A four-wheel earth-moving vehicle, patterned after the U.S. Army Universal Engineer Tractor, Rubber Tired, was used as the test bed for the electric-drive system evaluation program. System operation was evaluated in static dynamometer testing and vehicle operation over a test course. A computerized performance prediction program was appraised for its suitability as a system design tool by comparing calculated plots with vehicle performance. An extensive test program was planned to thoroughly check out the operation of the electric-drive system. Due to some component and sub-system operation limitations, the original test plan was revised to reflect the reducted capability of the system. Results of performance testing are presented and conclusions drawn concerning the suitability of the system as a vehicle electric propulsion system. Instrumentation capable of monitoring electrical parameters of variable frequency and distorted waveforms was developed. Shielding, grounding techniques and improved instrumentation circuit developments during the span of the program are described. Recommendations for future advanced development programs are made based upon experience gained in the current program. (Author)
