Abstract : The mechanical properties of composites reinforced with rectangular cross section fibers (ribbons) are determined. The strength and modulus for a model system composite formed of stainless steel ribbons and polyethylene ionomer resin are nearly isotropic in the plane parallel to the surface of the ribbons. These properties are compared to oriented circular fibers in which the reinforcement is essentially limited to the direction of the fibers. The longitudinal mechanical properties of the ribbon composites are comparable to longitudinal properties of oriented continuous fiber composites, while the transverse properties of the ribbon composites are similar to the longitudinal properties of oriented short fiber composites.
