Abstract : The elastic properties of discontinuous fiber composite sheets were measured under uniaxial tension. Both thermoset and thermoplastic matrices were used with 1/8 inch glass fiber reinforcement at volume loadings from ten to sixty percent. Angular distributions of fiber alignment about the tensile axis were determined by photographic analyses. These distributions, coupled with established theoretical models and orientation transformations, were used to develop mathematical expressions for predicting tensile moduli of thin sheet composites. Good agreement exists between the predicted and experimental values. The mathematical equations can be further simplified to permit engineering predictions of 'macro' properties for sheet composites.
