Abstract : A new method of Q-switching CO2 lasers by optical interference is presented together with tests demonstrating the principle of operation. The experiments show that 'pulse time modulation' (PTM) is the most efficient of three possible cavity arrangements and that the PTM system produces a pulse of constant amplitude electromagnetic radiation over a wide range of repetition rates. It is also shown that energy in individual rotational levels can be released in the presence of a predominant line. (Author)
