Abstract : In the past, accurate measurement of strains in propellant materials has often beendifficult. However, electro-optical gaging instruments now commercially availablehave shown promise in solving some of the problems of the past. These instrumentsrequire no physical contact with test samples and are adaptable to a wide range ofsample dimensions and test conditions. This report discusses the application of anelectro-optical extensometer to propellant strain measurement in these laboratories. Operating procedures, accuracy, problems encountered, and solution to the problems areall described. Typical test records are presented. (Author, modified-PL)
