Abstract : Hugoniot data were obtained for seven materials. These were Carbon Phenolic, Tape-Wound Silica Phenolic (TWSP), C-7 epoxy, quartz phenolic three-dimensional weave, carbon phenolic three-dimensional weave, Mylar, and Kapton. Shock velocity measurements were made in the first five materials, but Mylar and Kapton were not available in sheets thick enough to obtain shock velocity measurements without using laminated samples. The Hugoniot data for Mylar and Kapton were obtained by measuring the velocity with which the thin sheets fly off or 'split-away' from aluminum plates that have themselves been shocked. Hugoniot pressures in the tests ranged from a few kilobars to nearly two hundred kilobars. Additional experiments were performed to detect any multi-wave structure that might exist in the lower pressure shocks in Carbon Phenolic, TWSP, C-7 and the three-dimensional weaves. None were observed. Quartz piezoelectric transducer records of shock wave profiles in the three-dimensional weave materials were also made in the low kilobar pressure range. (Author)
