Abstract : Within the past few years, the notion that coding techniques ought to be applied to digital transmission over military communication satellite systems has become widely accepted. Systems designers have realized that, by permitting reliable transmission at lower signal-to-noise ratios per information bit E sub b/N sub o, the introduction of coding yields an effective coding gain which is as real as the gains from increasing satellite power, increasing antenna gain, or decreasing system noise temperature. Among the first coding techniques to be examined for this application were simple block codes, such as the extended Golay code, and sophisticated convolutional codes with sequential decoding.
