Abstract : This report deals qualitatively with the reliability requirements imposed upon data processing systems by their use in ballistic missile defense (BMD) systems. Three types of redundancy are described: (1) backup systems, (2) multicomputer systems, and (3) massive redundancy; and quantitative estimates of their effect upon system reliability are derived. The advantages and disadvantages of each form of reliability are summarized. Considerations about the selection of a data processing system for BMD are presented, along with a recommended configuration.
