Abstract : The report presents the results of a design definition study conducted to determine the design requirements for a Universal Stall Margin Indicating System (USMIS) which, with only minor modification, can be used on both subsonic and supersonic, fixed and variable wing sweep aircraft. An aerodynamic analysis was performed to determine and define those aerodynamic and configuration parameters which significantly influence the stall margin V/V sub s. The T-38, F-111A, C-130, and C-141 aircraft were considered typical and were examined in detail. The characteristics of the sensors required to monitor the necessary parameters to achieve the total system accuracy and response requirements are described. A tradeoff of various solid-state analog, hybrid, and digital mechanization techniques is discussed. A special purpose digital computer making extensive use of MOS integrated circuits was determined to be optimum in terms of universality, flexibility, performance, reliability, size, weight, and cost. The computer contains comprehensive self test and malfunction detection circuitry, and is designed so that modifications required when the basic system is used on different types of aircraft are limited to the addition of a characterizing module. This module is used to interface the computer with the aerodynamic and configuration characteristics of the particular aircraft. The computer output is designed to interface with any eventual stall warning/prevention devices, although it is primarily intended for use with a visual display. Two candidate vertical scale display configurations are presented, both requiring the same tape drive mechanism and electronics. (Author)
