Abstract : An investigation has been performed to determine the relationship between plane projected shadow images of three-dimensional irregular solids in a divergent beam and the volume and mass of the solid. The specific solid shapes investigated were actual bullet and metal fragments recovered from casualties in Vietnam. These solids were X-rayed at random orientations and various positions in an X-ray beam. The immediate objective was development of an empirical relationship between medical X-ray images and true volume and weight of the metal fragments and bullets responsible for the images. It was found that within the simple procedure used it was not possible to make volume determinations sufficiently accurate for our use. The methods described, however, may be suitable for applications if there is greater uniformity in the shape of the volumes to be determined. (Author)
