Abstract : Results of a program undertaken to investigate various surface treatments to develop adhesion of an electroless metal film to glass-, graphite-, and boron-fiber reinforced epoxy composite surfaces, are reported. Improved process conditions were developed including a combination of surface roughening and chemical conditioning resulting in coatings having much improved adhesion over those previously developed. Electroplated nickel coatings prepared by electroplating directly over the electroless metal withstood thermal shock tests. During rain erosion resistance tests failure occurred predominantly by erosion failure, not by adhesion failure. (Author, modified-PL).
