Abstract : The oxidation of CH4 and C3H8 on Pt electrodes in 80% H3PO4 at 130C has been studied. In particular, the effect of Ni(2+) on the rate of the anodic reaction has been explored. Ni(2+) enhances the oxidation of both CH4 and C3H8. However, the Ni(2+) carries with it an impurity which inhibits the oxidation reactions. The effect of Ni(2+) on the oxidation of CH4 has been studied with both platinized Pt and fuel cell electrodes. The effect of Ni(2+) on the oxidation of C3H8 has also been studied with both platinized Pt and partially immersed fuel cell electrodes. On platinized Pt, in the absence of Ni(2+) there is no well defined Tafel region, but the range of observed currents is much larger than with CH4. Four possible explanations of the catalytic effect are suggested. It was also shown that the Ni(2+) catalyst is compatible with the O2 electrode. (Author)
