Abstract : The treatment of rayon yarn with bis(chlorodiphenylphosphine)- decaborane (BCDPD) or dimeric chlorophospha (3)-o-Carborane (DCPC) results in an increase in the char yield of the pyrolyzed yarns. In the case of untreated rayon, weight retention at 800 degrees C is 20%, whereas the treated yarns yield boronated residues of 42-53%. Carbon yields as high as 28% have been obtained with the BCDPD TREATMENT. This treatment also results in substantial improvement in the oxidative stability of rayon at temperatures up to 250 degrees C. (Author-PL)
