Abstract : The report discusses the design and fabrication of a TV camera and control unit meeting EIA standards to be used as part of a closed-circuit TV system. The TV camera was equipped with a 'pinhole lens' and prism to provide a wide angle of view and a large depth of field. Prior to design and fabrication of the camera, two separate investigations were performed: (1) Because of existing scant and questionable information on optimum pinhole size design, a study was made to determine correct pinhole size for the TV camera. (2) Performance of a second study was to determine a correct prism size for an increased angle of view. Solution of the optimum pinhole size was achieved by a method employing Fresnel zones. The correct prism size was determined through the use of ray tracing which also showed effects of the prism on chromatic aberration, resolution, look-point and geometrical distortion. The results of these studies were incorporated in the optical assembly design of the TV camera. Design and fabrication of the electronic section of the TV camera was conventional with the exception that an image isocon camera tube was used in place of the customary image orthicon resulting in increased overall performance.
