Abstract : The second-generation Big Screen Night Observation Device was evaluated in RVN to determine the viewers effectiveness and suitability for use in a combat environment. The device was evaluated by six major units under varying climatic conditions. The viewer is a tripod-mounted night vision device in which the image is projected upon the eyepiece screen. This permits relatively comfortable viewing for long periods of time at light levels as low as starlight (moonless night) conditions. Using artificial light sources (flares, near-infrared searchlights), the viewer performs effectively on moonless nights with heavy overcast. Some mechanical problems require corrections. It was recommended that the viewer be deployed to RVN with a BOI of one device for each combat arms company size unit following the correction of deficiencies and shortcomings. Additional viewers for major units and separate installations should be determined by HQ USARV on a case-by-case basis. (Author)
