Abstract : A 256 x 256 element photoconductive image-sensor array having integrated thin-film scanning decoders was developed for use in a solid-state television camera during a previous contract. Novel systems for digital scanning of mosaic sensors which offer improvements in operating sensitivity and in picture quality have now been proposed and are being evaluated. These include: (1) An integrated sensor-decoder array providing multiple video outputs of reduced bandwidth. These parallel-output signals are subsequently combined to produce a single video signal having the full bandwidth determined by the frame rate and the total number of picture elements. By limiting the high-speed scanning to well-shielded peripheral circuits, it is expected that switching transient pickup can be reduced and effective sensitivity increased. This improvement will be particularly useful in the future construction of a 512 x 512 element integrated sensor which can be scanned at standard television frequencies. (2) Integrated video-coupling circuits employing voltage-sampling methods for suppression of switching transients. (3) Video-coupling circuits utilizing thin-film diodes instead of transistors for more convenient integration into photoconductive arrays. In parallel with the work on scanning systems an investigation of the factors affecting photoconductor sensitivity in thin-film arrays has been carried out. (Author)
