Abstract : This report represents the partial results of an extensive technical program that began in January 1967 at the Army Mobility Equipment Research and Development Center (MERDC), Fort Belvoir, Virginia. At that time, it was determined that a requirement existed, within the Army, to develop the capability to calculate the electromagnetic pulse (EMP) environment that is produced when a nuclear explosion occurs on or near the surface of the earth. The digital computer code ELECTRA represents, for the Army, the culmination of the first phase of the development of that capability. ELECTRA is a two-dimensional (two space dimensions and time) finite difference code for numerically integrating Maxwell's equations in the presence of an applied current density and a finitely conducting earth.
